  1. Is the use of a MMC (Micro Memory Card) necessary in a S7-300 CPU?
    Created: 2016-08-30 07:38:50

Is the use of a MMC (Micro Memory Card) necessary in a S7-300 CPU?

Yes, a Siemens s7 CPU requires work memory and load memory. The s7-300 only contains work memory (RAM). The MMC (EEPROM) needs to be place separately. The work memory contains the PLC program (program and data blocks) and stores the variables.

The load memory contains the PLC program (program and data blocks), systemdata (i.a. hardware configuration), remanence and possibly a back-up of the project.

The required size of the MMC is in most cases determined at 2x the work memory. Example: a CPU with 64kb work memory requires a 128 kB MMC.

  2. Which types of connection/protocols do the S7-300/400 CPUs and the CPs support by default?
    Created: 2016-08-30 07:41:36

Desirable connections and protocols concerning the S7-300/400 CPUs and the CPs support.

You can connect your controller to various subnetworks depending on which S7-300/400 CPU or CP you are using. The following types of connection/protocols can be used for these subnetworks:

    MPI (Multiple Protocol Interface)

    PROFIBUS

    Industrial Ethernet / PROFINET

  3. What does SCADA stand for?
    Created: 2016-08-30 07:43:50

The meaning of the term SCADA

    SCADA stands for
Supervisory control and data acquisition and represents  a system for remote monitoring and control
that operates with coded signals over communication channels.

  4. What is the difference between SCADA and HMI?
    Created: 2016-08-30 07:47:11

What is the difference between SCADA and HMI?

HMI (Human Machine Interface) is the front-end interface which is used by operators to interact with the supervisory system. These interactions include monitoring and controlling the automation processes.
Basically, HMI screens shall consist of SCADA mimics, alarms, reports, and trends for analyzing the industrial processes, while SCADA represents the entire central system which includes / communicates with the following components:

    •             Input/Output (IO) Devices

    •             Remote Terminal Units (RTU)

    •             Programmable Logic Controller (PLC)

    •             Communication network

    •             Supervisory System

    •             Human Machine Interface (HMI).
